- Please don’t get a pet while you’re a student.
- If you already own a pet, think very carefully before deciding whether to bring it to university.
- Pets are not allowed in student halls and most private landlords forbid them.
- Abandoning a pet is very cruel and illegal under UK Law.
In the past few years, the University has received anecdotal reports that some pets have been poorly cared for and, in a few cases, pets have even been abandoned by students after their courses finished. Please don’t get a pet while you’re a student. If you already own a pet, please think very carefully before deciding whether to take it to university with you.
Pets and Student Accommodation
Pets are
not allowed in student halls. Most private landlords also prohibit the keeping of pets.
Even if you move into accommodation that allows pets, caring for an animal is a big commitment which may not be compatible with student life.
Temporary Friendships with Pets
For those who love animals but can’t keep their own, there are some opportunities to temporarily experience the companionship of pets.
- Borrow My Doggy is an app connecting dog owners with people who would like to care for / play with dogs from time to time, but who can’t offer a permanent home to a dog.
- Temporary Animal Fostering is an option if your tenancy agreement allows pets, but you can’t keep pets permanently.
- The University & Students’ Union sometimes organise dogs on campus days to help students relieve stress. On these days, a few dogs and puppies are hosted on campus for students to play with. Keep an eye on UniLife to find out when such a day is next being planned.
